  • HDMI Cord/Projector

  • Teacher Laptop to project presentation

  • Learning the Library Catalog presentation (librarian created)

  • Scavenger Hunt One-Pager (librarian created)

  • Exit Ticket (librarian created)

  • Student laptops

Learning Outcomes

  • I can access and log-in to the online library catalog.

  • I can search for a book in the catalog in the LCPA physical books collection.

  • I can identify and use a book’s call number to locate a physical book on the bookshelf.

Instructional Procedures

Before Instruction

Before instruction, students will need to be prepared with their student laptops and know their 7-digit district student ID numbers. Teacher laptop should be connected to the projector via HDMI cord with the presentation slides pulled up and have the first slide displayed for students.

Direct Instruction

Using the prepared presentation, the librarian will demonstrate how to access & log-in to catalog; navigate basic search functions, and identify book features and read call numbers to locate the physical book in the collection.

Guided Practice

In pairs, students will work through using the catalog to search by author, book title, genre, and topic using a guided scavenger hunt activity. Students will have specific information that will guide each search query and provide answers based on each query. Librarian and Teacher will be able to visually check that students are successfully working through the guided practice by their query answers.

Independent Practice

Students will search for and locate a book based on a title, author, subject, or keyword search to acquire a book for independent reading. Students will then use the call number to retrieve the physical book from the physical collection for check-out.

Closing/Sharing/Reflection

Students will complete an exit-ticket to rate their comfortability with searching for a book in the online library catalog after checking out a book for independent reading.

Assessment

Formative Assessment: Students will complete the Library Catalog Scavenger Hunt One-Pager to demonstrate their understanding of searching in the online library catalog. Librarian and teacher will circulate and observe student responses during the scavenger hunt to assess student progression.

Summative Assessment: Students will locate a book for check-out in the online library catalog using their knowledge gained from completing the scavenger hunt with a classmate. Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding by successfully locating, placing a hold on, and checking out the book.

Differentiation

Students will have the option to work with a classmate or independently while completing the scavenger hunt. In partners, one student can verbalize instructions and navigate the catalog while the other student records their findings through the scavenger hunt.
