Summary

Students will brainstorm a list of words about people, places and things they love and add them to an online heart-shaped word cloud generator and then insert their word cloud image into a Google Slide by downloading, saving, and inserting it into a slide. The same concept can be applied for using words about library, books, reading, etc. for Valentine's Day or National Library Lover's Month.

Instructional Procedures

(For use with Google Classroom)

Go over the following instructions with the class, as you are demonstrating the steps.

  1. Brainstorm a list of 10-20 words of people, places, things you love. (Typing less than 10 words makes the word cloud pretty sparse. If students are quick to come up with words, they can use as many as you'll allow.)

  2. Go to: https://www.festisite.com/text-layout/word-cloud/ and type your list of words in the white ‘text to layout’ box. Type the word LOVE (all caps) as the first word followed by your list. Use a space between words, no commas. If you are typing something like picture books that includes two words, do not leave a space between the words. Type it as picturebooks.

  3. When finished, click on Preview to see your word cloud image. If you need to make changes, do it before downloading.

  4. Download the word cloud as an image in the shape of a heart. When the word cloud image pops up in a new screen, right click and save the image. Be sure to name the picture file something you can easily find. (For Chromebooks, two finger tap the trackpad and select 'Save image' or 'Save image as'.

  5. Insert the image onto the second Google Slide. Drag it to the center or use the align tool to center justify the image.

  6. Click the text box at the top of slide 2 to type your name and teacher's name/grade and then delete the first slide. (Include capitalization)

  7. Turn in the assignment when finished.

Assessment

Finished Google Slides will include:

  • an inserted heart word cloud (centered on the page)
  • student's first and last name (capitalized) with their teacher's last name initial and grade level
  • a deleted instructions slide (slide 1)

If students have not completed all three things above, return their assignment to allow them to make corrections.
