Students will be designing a new pair of shoes for a “client” partner.
-Read the story Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts.
-Tell students that today you are going to create a new pair of shoes for a client/partner.
- I always like to connect it to other jobs and how many times people are not designing what they want but rather designing something their customers want. (architects, teachers, engineers, marketing, designers, etc.)
- If we are going to design a pair of shoes for our partner, what kind of questions should we ask. (What color do you like? Do you want shoelaces, velcro, slip ons? What designs do you like? What activities do you do in your shoes?)
- Once we have collected the data, students will take a picture of their partners shoes. We talk about how to take a good picture and how there are many ways to stage their partners shoes. (side view, top view, action shot of their partner with the shoes, stage them, etc.)
-Once the picture is taken, students will use their filter to make their picture black and white.
-Then using the markup feature on their photo app, students will begin designing their shoes based on their partner's responses to their questions.
- Along the way encourage students to check in with their partner. Their partners will provide feedback.
- When students are done, I ask them to outline their shoes with a white marker, using the markup feature in their photo app. This really makes the shoes pop.
At the end of the session, hopefully they have a shoe created that meets their client's expectations.
If you don’t have an iPad, print out a shoe outline and have students color and design their shoes. Students could also create 3D models out of cardboard.
