Students will listen to a read aloud of the book The Mighty McKraken by Izzy B, participate in pre and post reading activities about the book and then create a poster highlighting one of the manners rules that Mrs. McKraken taught Gregory in the story. This lesson will also help students to connect with the 2025-2026 Missouri Show Me Readers Award Nominees.
The Mighty McKraken by Izzy B
Colored pencils (or you can use pencils, crayons, markers)
white paper or construction paper, cut in half
Objectives:
Students will make a connection between their own experiences and the experiences of the
characters in the story.
Students will engage in a post reading discussion about the story and use an example from the story to create a mini poster.
Before Reading:
-Introduce the book The Mighty McKraken by Izzy B
-Have students predict what they think the story will be about.
After Reading:
-Talk about using good manners and showing respect for others. Ask students to share ways that they use good manners and show respect for others. Ask students to share how they feel when someone treats them with kindness and shows them respect?
-Go back to the story and review the manners rules that Mrs. McKraken reminded Gregory about during the story, turn to those pages as you review Mrs. McKraken’s rules:
-If you make a mistake it’s a piece of cake to learn from it and make it great…
-We say thank you. We say please. We never interrupt or tease.
-When we share it shows we care.
-When you get a gift there’s something you must do. Look them in the eye, and and say thank you.
-Treat others like you’d want them to treat you, with a hug, and a smile, a how-do-you-do.
-Give each student a half sheet of paper. Have students choose one of Mrs.
McKraken’s manners rules and create a mini poster to highlight the one rule they chose. Be sure to display Mrs. McKraken’s Manners Rules in some way so students can refer to those when creating the mini poster:
